Data
Key Officers of the U.S. Foreign Service:
- Available on dataverse
- The Key Officers of the U.S. Foreign Service (KOFS) dataset contains information on the following, observed quarterly between 1966 and 2017: 1. the names, locations, and classifications of each U.S. overseas diplomatic post (embassies, consulates, branch offices, missions to international organizations, commercial offices, and other) 2. the diplomatic position categories represented at each post; 3. the identities of the top-ranking (“key”) officers at each post in each position category, as well as unique identifiers for each officer. It is therefore the most comprehensive micro-level dataset on diplomatic representation to ever be compiled.
Ambassadors:
- Replication data for: Conflict, Cooperation, and Delegated Diplomacy (International Organization, 2021): dataverse
- Here is a slightly updated version of the replication archive, which uses the newest release of the MID dataset (V5.0, with coverage extending to 2014).
- From this replication archive, I have organized some of the data in different formats which may be useful for future applications:
Diplomatic visits:
- Replication data for: State Visits and Leader Survival (with Alastair Smith) (American Journal of Political Science, 2021): dataverse
Visits data with additional coding: dataverse
- This dataset expands on the previous version by including variables capturing the type of visit, the names of any conferences or events attended or agreements signed during the visit, the position of the foreign visitor or visit recipient, and whether any direct leader-to-leader meeting occurred during the visit.
